IPO listing time: when new shares start trading

Updated 4 Nov 2026 · IPO Radar · tables below update with the live sheet

On listing day a new stock does not open at 9:15 AM like other shares. NSE and BSE run a special pre-open call auction from 9:00 AM, publish the listing (equilibrium) price around 9:55 AM, and normal trading in the stock starts at 10:00 AM IST.

Listing-day timings

  • 9:00–9:45 AM — order entry, modification and cancellation in the special pre-open session.
  • 9:45–9:55 AM — order matching; the equilibrium price is the listing price.
  • 9:55–10:00 AM — buffer to move into normal trading.
  • 10:00 AM — the stock trades normally until 3:30 PM.

How the listing price is set

During the pre-open session buyers and sellers place orders and the exchange finds the single price at which the most shares change hands. That price is the listing (opening) price and the basis for the listing gain you see quoted. It can be very different from the GMP the day before.

Listing gain = (listing price − issue price) ÷ issue price × 100. The listing-day close is a second number worth watching: many IPOs move a lot between the open and the close.

Selling on listing day

Allotted shares are in your demat by T+2, so you can sell from 10 AM on listing day like any other holding. Place a limit order rather than a market order: prices swing hard in the first minutes. For SME stocks you sell in lots, and the exchange's price bands for new SME listings can stop the price moving as far as the grey market expected.
