What is an SME IPO?

Updated 4 Nov 2026 · IPO Radar · tables below update with the live sheet

An SME IPO is a public issue by a small or medium company that lists on a separate platform — NSE Emerge or BSE SME — instead of the main board. The minimum investment is much larger, the issues are small, and listing results swing far more widely than on the main board.

SME IPO vs mainboard IPO

The differences that matter to an investor:

  • Where it lists: NSE Emerge or BSE SME, not the main NSE/BSE board.
  • Size: SME issuers are small companies (post-issue paid-up capital of up to ₹25 crore), so issues are usually ₹10–100 crore against hundreds or thousands of crores on the main board.
  • Minimum application: usually two lots, set so that one application is above ₹2 lakh (for example ₹2.2–2.9 lakh). A mainboard application can start at ₹14,000–15,000.
  • Market maker: every SME issue has a market maker who must quote buy and sell prices for at least three years, and part of the issue is reserved for them.
  • Approval: SME offer documents are cleared by the exchange's SME platform rather than going through SEBI's full mainboard review.
  • Trading: SME shares trade in lots after listing too, not single shares, which makes small exits harder.

The risks specific to SME IPOs

Small issues with small floats are easy to move. That shows up as very high subscription multiples and grey-market premiums that can unwind quickly — the table above shows how much wider SME listing outcomes are in both directions, and on the GMP accuracy page the grey market is a weaker guide for SME issues than for mainboard ones. SEBI has tightened SME rules repeatedly since 2024, including profit track-record requirements and a cap on how far the listing price can move on day one.

Look past the multiple: read the offer document's objects of the issue, related-party revenue, debt, and who the lead manager is. IPO Radar's AI review on each SME page lists the risks the offer document names.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum investment in an SME IPO?

Usually two lots, sized so the application is above ₹2 lakh — typically ₹2.2 lakh to ₹2.9 lakh at the top of the price band. Each issue's page on IPO Radar shows its exact minimum.

Are SME IPOs risky?

In a different way than you might expect. In IPO Radar's data about the same share of SME and mainboard IPOs listed below their issue price, but SME outcomes spread far wider in both directions — bigger losses as well as bigger gains — and GMP was a less reliable guide for them.

Where are SME IPOs listed?

On NSE Emerge (NSE's SME platform) or BSE SME. An SME company can later migrate to the main board if it meets the conditions.

Can I apply for an SME IPO through Zerodha or Groww?

Yes, most brokers list SME IPOs in the same IPO section. You bid in multiples of the SME lot size and approve the UPI mandate the same way.
